GRADARA

Panorama notturno del castello di Gradara da Villa MatarazzoJust 2 Km from Villa Matarazzo you can visit Gradara, known for its historic Malatesta Fortress and the fortified village which is one of the best preserved medieval architecture of Italy, it is at walking distance from Villa Matarazzo, you can reach the Castle with an easy trek. Visiting the castle of Gradara you will be fascinated by the story of Paolo and Francesca and their love.

The castle is protected by two city walls, the outermost wall extends for almost 800 meters with its imposing structure. The view of the fortress is spectacular especially at night when the historical village is underlined. Thanks to its geographical position Gradara has been a crossroads of traffic and people since ancient times: during the medieval period the fort was one of the main sites of clashes between militias loyal to the papacy and the turbulent families of Romagna and Marche.

The rule of the Malatesta dominating Gradara ended in 1463 with the man-at-arms and patron Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta: excommunicated by Pope Pius II, Sigismondo collided with the Duke Federico of Montefeltro, who besieged Gradara on behalf of the Church. The fortress resisted numerous attacks in the past, in that circumstance had to surrender and, although not conquered, was resigned in the vicarage by the Pope to the Sforza of Pesaro, close allies of the Church

From that moment Gradara came under various rulers and some of the most important families of the peninsula that fought for his possession: the Della Rovere, the Borgias, the Medicis have walked through the halls of the castle, confirming the leading role of the Malatesta fortress in the complicated and tumultuous political landscape of the papal territories situated between Marche and Romagna.

Since 1641, Gradara came under the direct control of the Papal States and so began his long agony. In 1920 the family Zanvettori bought the castle of Gradara, now reduced to a ruin, financing the renovation.

In 1938 the family decided to sell the castle to the State while maintaining the usufruct which declined after the death of Mrs. Zanvettori in 1983. Later, after restoration and renovation, the castle became a state museum.
